“How long will it last?” can mean three different things: how many hours it stays lit each night, how long it takes to charge, and how many years it keeps working. Here are honest answers for outdoor solar lights like step lights and wall lanterns.
Hours of light each night
After a full sunny day, a good solar light runs most of the night. Our solar step lights give up to 8–9 hours on a full charge, and the L-888 wall lantern up to 12 hours in motion-sensor mode. Two things shorten this:
- Less sun: cloudy or rainy days, winter haze or shade mean less charge, so a shorter night.
- Brighter modes: an always-on mode uses far more battery than a motion-sensor mode, which only lights up brightly when someone is near.
Charging time
Most outdoor solar lights need roughly 4 to 6 hours of direct sunlight to charge fully (about 4–5 hours for our step lights, about 6 for the L-888). For the very first use, leave them in full sun for a whole day before expecting a full night.
How many years?
- LEDs last a very long time; our step lights are rated around 10,000 hours.
- The rechargeable battery is the part that ages. Like a phone battery, it slowly holds less charge over the years, so run time drops. Strong heat and long stretches without sun speed this up.
- The panel keeps working as long as it stays clean and uncracked.
Simple care that makes them last
- Wipe the panel with a damp cloth every few weeks. Dust and bird droppings block the sun, especially in dry months.
- Keep the panel facing open sky; trim plants that grow over it.
- If you are away for a long time or store the lights, switch them off (where there is a switch) so the battery doesn’t drain completely.
- After a long cloudy spell, give the lights one full sunny day to recover.
When a light seems “dead”
Before assuming it has failed: check the battery tab or power button, give it a full day of sun, then cover the panel with your hand. If it lights up, it works, and the problem is light from a street lamp or porch light reaching the panel at night.
Questions people ask
How long do solar lights stay on at night?
After a full sunny day, most of the night. Our step lights give up to 8–9 hours and the L-888 lantern up to 12 hours in motion-sensor mode. Cloudy days and always-on modes shorten it.
How long does it take to charge solar lights?
Roughly 4 to 6 hours of direct sunlight. On the first day, leave them in full sun all day.
Do solar lights charge on cloudy days?
A little. They still collect some light, but much less than in direct sun, so they stay on for a shorter time.
Should I turn solar lights off during the day?
No need. The light sensor keeps them off in daylight while they charge, and switches them on at dusk.
